History

• Ancient Sanctuary: Samothrace is famous for the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a significant religious site in ancient times dedicated to the worship of the Cabiri, deities associated with mysteries and initiations.
• Cultural Heritage: The island played an important role in ancient Greek religion and mythology. It is known for the iconic Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike of Samothrace).

Winged Victory of Samothrace

The most famous artifact from the temple complex is the 2.5-metre marble statue of Nike (now known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace), which dates from about 190 BC.

The statue of Nike was, however, found in pieces between the ruins of the sanctuary. Fragments of her clothing and feathers from the wings were also discovered, but the head and the arms were never retrieved.

Today standing at the top of a staircase in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Nike of Samothrace looks down over her admiring crowds.

  • This was the central focus of Samothracian mythology. The cult of the Great Gods was a mystery religion, meaning its rituals and beliefs were kept secret from non-initiates.
  • These deities, often referred to as the Kabeiroi, were believed to offer protection, particularly to sailors.
• Mythological Figures:
  • According to mythology, Samothrace was associated with figures like:
    • Zeus: Homer's "Iliad" mentions that Poseidon watched the Trojan War from Mount Saos on Samothrace.
    • Electra: She was one of the Pleiades, and according to some myths, she had offspring with Zeus on Samothrace, including Dardanos, Iasion, and Harmonia.
    • Harmonia is also tied to the mythology of the island and her connection to the rituals of the great gods.
• Mystery Cults:
  • The Samothracian Mysteries were second in importance only to the Eleusinian Mysteries. They involved initiation rites that promised spiritual benefits and protection.
