Nisyros Island
The result of a volcano and caressed by the sea
The tiny island of Nisyros has a wild, untamed beauty and captivating volcanic energy unlike anything else in the Dodecanese or throughout the entire Aegean Sea.
Nisyros is a sculpture island created by lava, the only active volcano in the eastern Aegean in Greece. It is made of black lava, pumice, and white, and red rust, which are the materials used to build houses, temples, and castles. Nisyros’s natural environment is characterized by rich flora and fauna with incredible diversity for such a small space…
The active volcano and hot springs, which characterize the nature of Nisyros, are the attraction and the main reason for visiting the island.
A perfect place to chill out, relax and immerse in breath-taking natural beauty, which is protected by the European Union ‘Natura 2000’ program.
According to Greek mythology, Nisyros is a fragment of Kos, when Poseidon was pursuing one of the Gigantes (Giants), Polybotes, broke off a fragment of Kos with his trident and hurled it upon him, and the missile became an island, Nisyros, with the Gigante lying beneath it.
Nisyros’ charming main town of Mandraki is tucked into hills on the northwest tip of the island, featuring a magical waterfront with breathtaking white-washed houses and many traditional tavernas along with the town squares.
The island is ideal for anyone looking for a spiritual experience, as there are so many monasteries to visit, with Panagia Spiliani being the most popular.
Thanks to all the volcanic activity, thermal springs pour out their mineral-filled waters into the sea at several points around Nisyros; many visitors come to the spa at Loutra on the north coast to take advantage of their healing properties.
Nisyros may not have the glamorous beaches of other islands, however, the water is crystal clear and refreshing on a hot day.
The paths of Nisyros attract hikers from all over the world, with many returning year after year, and are also ideal for photography and other activities.
