The village is connected from antiquitity with Caryatids, copies of the famous female figures in Erechtheion. During the Byzantine period, the village was named Arachova, which means a place planted with walnut trees.
In Karyes you can find a large variety of local traditional products such as chestnuts, walnuts, organic olive oil and olives, local wine, tea, oregano, honey, traditional cheeses, local meats, village bread and crackers and traditional pastries and pasta.

Mount Taygetus
www.discovergreece.ru/MtTaygetus/LaconiaThe mountain of Taygetus (or Pentadaktylos, or Taygetos) has length 115 km, maximum width 30 km and area of 2,500 square kilometers, which is composed of four main parts: the north (towards Arcadia), the average East (towards Sparta), the Western and Southern Taygetos with the mountains of the Mani.
Its highest peak is called Prophet Elias, height 2,407 m and is located in the upper part of the site called Pyramid because of the characteristic shape. (There is a big question mark over whether this rock structure is manmade or a natural occurrence. Old legend tells that in ancient years, Spartans built a temple of Apollo at the peak – at the same place of Prophet Elias).

Much of it is covered by pines and firs, and has a large number of small streams and rivers. It presents a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its large area with only 25 endemic species and a passage for migratory birds.
On the slopes of the Taygetos are numerous small villages with great local color and operated mountain resort at a height of 1,600 meters.
Georgitsi village: The Georgitsi is a beautiful mountain village of Laconia built on the eastern slopes of the Taygetos at an altitude of 1000 meters, overlooking the valley of the Eurotas. It is 29 km from Sparta and 225 km from Athens. Because of its incredible views, has been nicknamed Balcony of Taygetos!
The climate is continental: cool in summer and cold in winter. Most houses are stone-tiled roofs. The sights are the church of St. Demetrios, the church of Prophet Elias, the primary school and the mills, as well as the ruined home of the great painter and sculptor Peter Roubou who was born in 1873 in Georgitsi.
