Visit Kythira….Aphrodite’s Island!

The wonderful for its exciting contrasts island of Kythira has been home to hosts ofpeoples and civilizations: from the Neolithic Age to the Minoan times (20th century AC) and to the Mycenaens, the Dorians and the Spartans, still in the ancient times; from the Byzantine middle ages to the Venetian rule; from the Ottoman to the English occupation; from the State of the Ionian Islands to the modern Greek State which it joined in 1864. The ancient myth that referred the island as Aphrodite’s birthplace has been the inspiration for the paintings of celebrated artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Jean-Antoine Watteau. Now, a trip to Kythira is the symbol of a burning desire, of hankering for beauty; and not unjustly so.

Beaches: Diakofti, Kaladi, Melidoni, Halkos, Fyri Ammos, Palaiopoli, Platia Ammos, Agia Pelagia, Kapsali, Fourni, Lagada.

Monasteries & Churches: The greatest monastery is Panagia Myrtidiotissa which attracts thousands of visitors every year. The monastery of Agia Elessa, Agia Moni andAgios Theodoros are also significant.

Historical monuments are in Paleochora (the Byzantine capital of Kythira with many churches), the bridge of Katouni and the lighthouse of Moudari (the highest -25 metres- the English built in the Hellenic area).

On Kythira there is also a Byzantine museum (with hagiographies from the early Christianic period and an archaeological museum (with vessels of the Minoan and Mycenaean years.)
Villages: On Kythira there are many villages. Hora is the capital of the island (with narrow roads and white houses and also a dominant castle). Avlemonas is very beautiful and picturesque, Kapsali is the seaport of Hora where many festivals take place and Potamos is the commercial centre with a market every Sunday.

In addition, the island offers opportunities for hiking and hunting.

Local products: the high quality honey of Kythira and Sempreviva (a yellow plant which grows only on Kythira and never dies).

Kythira is an island of unique majesty and beauty which keeps its authentic characteristics and offers a sense of calmness and revitalization to the visitor.
