Admire the beautiful landscape and wild flowers…….Discover the marvellous green countryside by the sea! In Aigialia “little Tuscany” …… a hidden secret in the northeast of Achaia!
Although Aigialia is very close to large urban centers (Patras and Aegio) and internationally recognizable spots as Ancient Olympia, Delphi, etc., it remains relatively unknown and unexplored. Aigialia is called “Tuscany of Greece” as mountains and verdant slopes plunge into the sea and and compose a unique color canvas between the green of firs and the blue of the sea.
Aigialia is known since ancient times as in the 8th century B.C. here was founded “the first Achaean League” based in Aigio. It was the first federal republic in history, 2600 years before U.S.A and 2800 years before the European Union!
Another attraction of the area is the rack railway….gets on the wagons and enjoy the unforgettable beauty of Achaean nature!
The main characteristic of Aigialia is the vast number of beaches (an endless coastline total length of 55 km) and sea attractions in the area.
The villages of Longos and Selianitika are situated near a bay in the northeast district of Achaia. The area is outstanding with its picturesque bay, green olive groves and citrus tree plantations. There are cosy taverns on the beach, as well as in the villages, with excellent Greek and international food. Moreover, there are numerous lovely cafes, an open air cinema and many shops.
Athens is 185 km away (airports: Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos) and Patras, the capital of the district Achaia, is only 30 km away (Araxos Airport near Patras).

Aigialia The litlle Tuscany
The region of Aigialia (means coastline), is located in Achaia and is one of the most beautiful and most interesting of northern Peloponnese.
The scenery is a contrast of wonderful beaches in the Corinthian Gulf, fertile plains (citrus trees and olive trees), lush hills and mountains.
In this mountainous landscape you will find typical mountain villages, hidden monasteries and forgotten ancient sites.
At the foot of the Mount Chelmos (2,340 m above sea level), a popular skiing area of this region, lies the famous town of Kalavryta which is to be reached from the coastal village Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge by cog railway.
The main places in Aigialia include Aigio, Diakofto, Akrata, Longos, Selianitika and Aigira.
Aigio is the capital of Aigialia and this is the second biggest city of Achaia after the town of Patras. In Aigio you will find a number of tourist attractions with the most important the church of “Panagia Trypiti” which was built inside a cave and is located near the harbour of Aigio and 2 more significant and well known religious shrines, the Holy Monastery of the Taxiarches and St. Leontius.
In less than half an hour the visitor can be found from the coast (an endless cosatline, total lenght of 55 km) in the mountainous area of Aigialia or even in the ski centre of Kalavryta. Beautiful villages offer varied agrotourism activities such as cultivation, harvesting and processing of the fruits. Visitable wineries mark the wine tourism activities of the area and the local wine roads between the vineyards. Visitable olive mills present the creation of the exceptional local virgin olive oil.
Alternative museums such as: Water Power Complex Eftapitas, archeological sites, monasteries and churches of particular architecture, of religious and historical value. The picture is completed with the gastronomic experience of high quality local products and delicacies.
Odontotos rack railway Diakopto –Kalavrita, under the shadow of Helmos Mountain!
A trip on the train will give you a real taste!
About 113 years ago Odontotos rack railway started from the seaside town of Diakopto parallel to the river and climbed to Kalavrita through bridges and tunnels.
Since then the Vouraikos River and Odontotos go together.
The little train incorporated so well to the natural environment that it seems that it had always been there.
The way it was constructed did not put a strain on the ecosystem of the gorge.
Using stone and wood from the area the technicians’ work is so perfect that someone may think that the nature worked on its own.
Odontotos is not just a train.
Vouraikos gorge and Odontotos rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita is a unique attraction in Greece!
Activities: Which activities can someone wish to do and not find them in Aigialia?
